Holbox is part of an area for the protection of flora and fauna called Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve and is accessible only by boat from the port of Chiquilà. This is where you can take the 20 minute ferry ride across the Yalahau lagoon. There is also service aboard private boats. This region is a refuge for several endangered species. On the island there is no pavement and there are only a few cars. All the streets are simply white sand!
Yala-hau is a Mayan word that means “Lord Jaguar”. It's located 30 minutes from the port of Chiquilà. Yalahau is a spring of crystal clear water that contains historical beauty. It is said to possess healing properties. It's considered a "fountain of youth". Traditionally fishermen and Maya travelers used the place as a source of fresh drinking water.
